The Sonning Show started in the 1960‘s following produce competitions held by the WI in Pearson Hall. From here it spread to the Working Men‘s Club. There had been no Produce Show in 1976 due to Sonning Festival nor in 1977 due to the Queen‘s Silver Jubilee Festivities. Reverend George Stokes then invited the Show to the vicarage garden in 1978. Ten years later, needing more space, it moved to the Sonning Primary School where it continues to be held each year in September.

The show follows the 1960‘s format with a produce competition to which residents of Sonning, Charvil and Sonning Eye, and members of village organisations are invited to enter. Entries need to be taken to the school between 10am and noon on the Saturday morning of the show. There are a variety of classes covering cookery, fruit and vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, photography, art and craft for which cups and trophies are awarded to the winners. There are also children‘s classes including cookery, photography, art and craft for which there is prize money.

From 2pm a fete takes place on the school field with many village organisations running stalls for their own fund-raising. In the arena different activities take place such as, tug-of-war, family sports and Peg‘s challenge which usually involves events such as throwing water balloons to your partner!

This year the event will be on 10th September and there will be a packed show ground, where you will be able to find out everything about our wonderful village from the church to the flower club, from the Sonning Club to the W.I. and from the Guides to the Scouts and everything in between.
